1997 was a major epidemic year ofr BYMV in narrow-leafed lupins in Western Australia. Not only was the virus very widespread in lupin crops in the medium and high rainfall areas, but also it was found further north and east than normal, spreading in low rainfall agricultural zones where conditions for the virus are usually unfavourable. A new strain of BYMV, the non-necrotic strain, recently found in wheatbelt areas of WA has the potential to become more widespread resulting in increased yield losses in l
lent in the Kojonup and Cranbrook areas. Wild narrow-leafed lupin populations were also inspected in the survey. The non-necrotic strain of BYMV was present in 9 of 34 of these populations, being most prevalent in the York, Bindoon and Bunbury areas whe
