The Northern Australia Quarantine Strategy (NAQS) was established in 1989 as an outcome of a major evaluation of quarantine in Australia. NAQS activities include surveying for weeds, insect pests and diseases of plants; and pests and diseases of plants; and pests and diseases of animals in northern Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. The primary goal is to provide early detection and warning of new quarantine threats or incursions. A targetted approach was adopted for all pests, diseases and weeds.
