The project was devised to seek tropical grasses capable of growing in poor soils in the semi-arid tropics and of tolerating heavy grazing. Collections of grasses from the Kruger National Park in South Africa introduced to Australia are being screened in S.E. Queensland initially to assess potential value for further testing under Australian conditions, which are persistent and productive under heavy stocking.
