The Lower Irwin Catchment Group encompasses the whole Irwin Shire / Land Conservation District. The catchment does not all drain into the Irwin River. The northern part of the district drains into the Allanooka Basin and the southern part drains into the Arrowsmith River. This was not perceived as a problem as the majority of the catchment is sandplain and surface catchments are not as relevant as in some other areas.
