Abstract: The major findings from the project were: that potassium applied to pasture and crop rotations on a sandplain soil leaches slowly down the soil profile and the majority of the potassium applied over a five year period remained within one metre of the soil surface. Distribution of potassium in the soil profile is affected by species root depth, cropping intensity, rate of fertiliser application and large rain events. L. cosentinii was the most effective species at retaining fertiliser K in the pool of avaible K. The fate of potassium fertiliser applied to annual crops and pastures will be affected by the stability of the rotations as well as the effect of plant root depth on recycling of K. Predictions of pasture responses to potassium from soil tests ar
