The project began in 1982 in France and Northern Africa, where the dock plant has many insect enemies but where it is not a pest. After 3 years of specificity testing, 2 clear wing Sessiid moths, Chamaesphecia doryliformis and Bembecia chrysidiformis, were found to be totally and specifically dependent upon the dock weed for survival, and which destroyed the weed in the process of feeding on it.
