Mastitis is inflammation of the mammary gland, and is almost always caused by infection with bacteria. Its costs are measured economically in terms of lost production and the costs of treating sick cows and replacing culled cows. In the early 1970s a set of mastitis control measures was successfully trialled in New South Wales, and this has formed the basis of Australian mastitis control recommendations since then.
