Abstract: An examination was made of 271 trials investigating effect of rates of nitrogen fertilisers on wheat to determine the influence of N rate and grain yield response on protein levels in the grain. Eighty two per cent of the trials were not in disgreement with the theory of Toms (1965). At a cost price ratio (CPR) (fertiliser N to wheat grain) = 5. 147 of the trials did not give a profitable response to N fertiliser.
