Vaccination with various preparations of D. congolensis filaments was shown to lessen the number and severity of lesions, or increase the rate of lesion resolution, in Merino sheep when challenged with the same strain of D. congolensis in pen studies. Cross protection studies comparing the AG1 strain and an isolate from the Research Station showed that the strain variation had been an important factor in the poor response of the vaccine in field trials.
