During the period between September 1987 and August 1989 a total of 145,947 core samples of wool were examined for the presence of lice exoskeletons. In the first 12 months, 28.5 per cent of bale brands were found to have lice. This has been reduced to 25.4 per cent in 1988/89. The sensitivity of the examination of the core sample in detecting infested flocks is estimated at 80 per cent when 5 lots are tested from a flock. The specificity of the test is estimated as 99.7 per cent. Using these estimates
