Abstract: Highest yields were obtained with earliest sowings, with yield reductions due to delayed sowing ranging from 3 to 13 per cent per week delay. Yields increased with rates of seed above 22 kg/ha in seven trials and in most cases were increased with rates above the normal 50 to 60 kg/ha. Nitrogen fertilisers increased yields in 18 of the 23 trials. Increased nitrogen rates and increased seeding rates partly counteracted yield reductions caused by delayed sowing.
