Abstract: The investigation showed that the cracking clay soils north of and fringing on the present development area were inherently saline and the water table had risen about 5 m since development and was causing severe surface salination in some areas. It appeared that the water table had risen because of the domestic and municipal use of water for gardens and parks, coupled with poor underground drainage. The Karratha water supply also contained up to 900 mg per litre total soluble salts - a poor quality water
y soil.
