Abstract: The pasture meter is unsuitable for use as a screening technique for biomass production as it is sensitive to microtopography, within plot variability, moisture conditions and plant type. Work conducted jointly with CSIRO (Floreat) using both wheat and barley genotypes has shown that spectral reflectance measurements are associated with biomass production. Genetic variability in nitrogen utilization efficiency is present within the barley breeding programme however screening for this character in the fiel
