The fertility of first-litter sows is affected by the mobilization of body reserves during lactation. The amount of body reserves at farrowing has a direct effect on the yield of milk but does not affect milk composition. The interval between weaning and mating in first-litter sows is extended when they have lost substantial body reserves during lactation.
