Renovation cropping involves turning a crop into the soil at flowering or cutting and leaving it on the soil surface. This increases soil organic matter and may increase soil nitrogen if a legume crop is used. This paper assesses the economic benefits of renovation cropping and the potential costs in Western Australia. It also investigates the circumstances in which renovation will be profitable and those that result in loses to growers.
