Vegetable growers in Western Australia are finding it increasingly difficult to offset rising production costs with increases in production efficiency. The use of composts and other soil amendments in vegetable production is an approach that has potential to reduce production costs by increasing the soils ability to hold water and nutrients as well as to combat the incidence of pests and diseases. Almost half of Western Australia's vegetable production and over half of its exports occurs on soils of the Sn Coastal Plain that are classified as coarse sands. These soils have limited ability to hold water and nutrients, making it difficult for farmers to achieve an optimal nutrient and fertiliser balance, without the risk of reducing yields and profits.
