Clearing of native vegetation has resulted in land degradation reducing the productivity and sustainability of farmland. Perennial pastures are proposed as one solution to prevent and ameliorate some of the problems. In this study perennial species were assessed in terms of their ability to reduce soil moisture content, persist and remain productive and the role they might play in alleviating wind erosion and soil water repellence.
