The identification and assessment of the value adding potential of commodities and industries is an important factor in strategic planning and resource allocation. While national and state statistics on €value added' components are available at aggregated levels, there have been no statistics available at the disaggregated commodity level. In 1996, a project was undertaken to develop €value chain' models to estimate the value added component of major agricultural commodities in Western Australia.
