The Western Australian Department of Agriculture's initiative to import Awassi fat tail sheep is aimed at improving opportunities for agricultural diversification through: exporting premium quality ram lambs, breeding ewes and chilled carcases to the Middle East, establishing a profitable sheep dairy industry to replace imports and meet export demand, and supplying specialty carpet wool to replace current imports by the Australian carpet manufacturing industry. The Awassi was chosen for the importation beuse it is the most well known and widely distributed breed of fat tail sheep in the world. In April 1985, Awassi embryos were collected, frozen and flown to Australia's maximum security quarantine station on Cocos Island, where they produced 41 Awassi l
