Abstract: With appropriate fertilizer application and plot design, there was no consistent yield advantage from reducing inter-row spacing below 0.18 m. This contrasted with earlier work where experimental design may have biased results towards higher yields in the narrower spacings. Additional factors studied were the effect of stubble retention, the effect of plant population, and the effect of variety on response to changing row spacings.
