Abstract: This project has demonstrated a marked effect of soil nitrogen status on the growing patterns of wheat roots. The project has also shown that nitrogen uptake in a leaching environment is highly sensitive to small changes in the distribution of roots in the soil. This combination of factors is important with regard to optimizing the efficiency of use of nitrogen fertilizers, and minimising flow of nitrate to groundwater.
