Land and stream salinization in southern Western Australia has now reached a state where 4,430 km2 of agricultural land has become salinized and less than 50 percent of streamflow remains fresh. Experimental evidence shows that replanting trees on farmland can halt and reverse rising groundwater. The most promising strategy is dense replanting in the valley and on adjacent sideslopes covering at least 30 percent of farmland in areas with rainfall exceeding 700 mm/yr. A smaller percentage of planting may b
ilable, of which tree planting is an important component.
