The prospects for a rice industry in the Ord River irrigation area (ORIA) appear to be limited (for technical and economic reasons) to the domestic market, because of the low and volatile nature of prices obtained on export markets. The profits from rice production in the ORIA, however, are likely to be significantly below those available from currently produced crops, particuolarly some horticultural and hybrid seed crops. Hydrological problems may preclude large-scale rice production in the future.
