Abstract: In this video David Bellamy begins by discussing how overcropping, overgrazing and the wind combine to cause soil erosion and soil degradation in Western Australia. Once productive agricultural land is turning into desert all over the world. He discusses sheet erosion caused by heavy rains falling on water repellent soil and washing away soil and seeds. Gully erosion is caused by the removal of trees on hills followed by rains. David Bellamy shows the difference between soils of agricultural lands and ncleared native vegetation areas. He then goes on to discuss the causes and effects of salinity in Western Australia. He shows how the problem can be corrected by growing trees and woody plants. The return of insects can assist in restoration of soil
