Soil compaction and structural degradation in the low rainfall areas of Western Australia have lead to poor soil physical fertility (low water supply and storage in some situations, waterlogging in others) which in turn significantly reduced water use efficiency of wheat and field peas. A "package" of deep ripping and gypsum application together with balanced nutrient application and retention of crop residues was effective in improving soil health and significantly increasing wheat and pea yields.
