Compound 1080 is highly toxic to most vertebrates. In 1944, 1080 was found to occur in plants in South Africa which were known to be poisonous to livestock. It was not known until 10 years after it was first used in Australia that it also occurred naturally in native plants which occur over a large area of this country.
