Abstract: During a voyage on a vessel carrying 23 000 Merino wethers it appeared that hay stacked in air excape routes was a major cause of the poor environment which developed. Advantages in housing sheep above deck appeared to be related primarily to air circulation and secondarily to lower wet and dry bulb temperatures. Feeding hay in troughs, or oat grain rations with 7.5 to 19 per cent added roughage reduced death rates compared with hay on the pen floor or oat diets without added roughage. There were no respo
