A practical disease management strategy was developed for control of barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) in cereal crops in high BYDV risk zones. It can be used to protect wheat, barley and oat crops from yield loss due to this aphid-borne virus. It involves spraying cereal crops in high BYDV risk zones with newer generation synthetic pyrethroids twice in winter. The chemicals used are alpha-cypermethrin and beta-cyfluthrin at 12 g.a.i./ha, or as low as 6 g.a.i./ha. The sprays are applied 3 and 7 weeks after
