The widespread adoption of Ornithopus compressus (yellow serradella) as a pasture legume for lighter textured and acid soils is limited by the high cost of establishment. A major component in the cost of establishment is the rate of sowing needed to achieve a desirable density using pod which has a low level of initial germinability. A commercial processing system which can supply highly germinable seed is needed if the adoption of yellow serradella is to advance. A serradella dehuller, designed by Keith nders of the NSW Department of Agriculture, Trangie, has potential to fill this role.
