Based on weed counts, crop yields, and the rapid decline in the number of brome grass seeds in the soil, the lupin-wheat sequence was the most effective. During the lupin phase, brome grass was most effectively controlled when a knockdown herbicide like glyphosate or paraquat was mixed with simazine as a pre-sowing treatment, followed by the application of fluazifop-butyl. Such a herbicide regime in the lupin crop ensured a 98 per cent annual decrease in brome grass seed bank with only 0.7 per cent effec
t the key to the long term control of brome grass lies in the prevention of seed production in the wheat year after lupins.
