Abstract: (En)
An investigation of the risks associated with sowing wheat in mid-April in Western Australia (which is possible one in 4 years in the WA wheatbelt) was carried out from 1994 to 1998. The main aims were to: 1) carry out a survey of growers attitudes to April sown wheat; 2) develop techniques to minimise the risks associated with very early sowing (studies on poor crop establishment); 3) define the plant characters required for early sowing by investigating promising varieties and crossbreds; and 4) develop database to be used in a decision aid package. Growers were found to be concerned with the need to find a replacement for Spear, poor crop establishment, frost and weed control issues. Field trial studies suggested that it is still better to sow as ear
